What to Do After an Accident?
There are more than 24 million auto accidents a year. Each one is an inconvenience for everybody involved, but by taking smart steps, you can make sure your inconvenience is kept to a minimum.
1. Stay calm! Now's the time you need a clear head. Call someone to help you if you can't think clearly.
2. Get all the facts at the time of the accident. You will need "who, what, when, and where". Make note of the time of day, place of accident; get all names, addresses, auto license numbers and drivers' license numbers of involved parties.
3. Always remove your belongings before leaving your car with a towing company or at a repair facility! Try to do this at the accident scene whenever possible or as soon afterward as you can. Often cars cannot be properly secured for extended periods after accidents, making them easy prey for thieves.
4. Report your accident immediately to your insurance agent or company. They'll help you with what to do next. It is helpful if you carry contact information for your insurance company in the glove box of your car.
5. Cooperate with your agent and insurance company. You'll find they are as interested as you are in making sure you get treated fairly and that your inconvenience is kept to a minimum.
6. Choose a body shop you have confidence in for your repair work. Select a shop that will give you quality work at a fair price.
